Thorin Oakensheild
He is the leader of the company when Gandalf is not present, uncle of Fili and Kili and is the rightful king under the mountain.
Thorin son of Thrain, son of Thror had battled many wars but nothing would prepare him to fight the great dragon Smaug.
Once Thorin's father had lost Erebor he then went for the Mines of Moria that his kin had once lost, that did not turn out great though, Azog the pale white orc had decapitated Thorin's father, which made Thorin extremely mad, then Thorin grabbed a log and used it as a shield then battled Azog to the death, or so he thought.....

Tauriel
Tauriel is the lonely elf companion of Legolas and is disliked by king Thranduil, she is extremely good with a bow but she apparently prefers elvish blades. In the book she too is not mentioned, but in the movie she appears to have a special relationship with Kili the dwarf.
She is great at killing spiders and orcs. She is very good at defying orders. She helps Kili when he is shot by a mortal shaft, she takes some athelas (kings-foil) off Bofur and uses it to heal Kili.

Thranduil
Thranduil is a greedy, rich king of the wood elf realm. But all he really wants is to protect his kingdom, however he would not risk the life of his people to help the dwarves in the dark days and does not care of other lands.
Thranduil's people catch the thirteen dwarves and lock them in their prison, Thranduil offers Thorin his help in return, Thorin brings him white gems of pure starlight, but Thorin refuses and if not for Bilbo and the ring's help all the dwarves would have rot and died in the cells.
In the book, Thranduil is only mentioned as the 'elf king' and his great doors are closed by magic. He also wears a crown of leaves and twigs. Thranduil is also the father of Legolas.

Bilbo Baggins
Bilbo stars in both the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit trilogy, he grows very homesick but also finds his courage and his sense of adventure on his unexpected journey. He is mostly the heart of the party and he doesn't realise it. He also shares a strong bond with Gandalf the Grey and Bofur the dwarf. Like all hobbits, Bilbo dislikes visitors and it takes a lot to get him to settle in with changes.
In the Hobbit an Unexpected Journey he finds the ring of power in goblin town and it's possessor Gollum soon finds out, and he is not happy about it. Soon after Bilbo finds out what the ring does and uses it more and more but he does not know that it will create many future wars and will put many lives in danger, including his much younger cousin Frodo.

Legolas Greenleaf

Legolas (played by Orlando Bloom) stars in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogy, however he is not mentioned in the book. He is a wood elf of the wood elf realm, and like most other wood elves he is not as smart as elves of Imladris (Rivendell) and is far more dangerous.
In the Lord of the Rings trilogy Legolas is kind hearted and down to Earth but in the Hobbit hes is impatient and is very mean towards the dwarves. He tries to stop the dwarves on their quest but soon fails, he then follows the dwarves to lake town along side Tauriel.
